Other acts featured across the collection include Yonaka (‘Today’), Palaye Royale (‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’), Barns Courtney (‘1979’), Alice Glass (‘Drown’) and Starbenders (‘Tonight, Tonight’).

“‘Siamese Dream’ was the soundtrack to my high school years and ‘Hummer’ is the song that takes me back there in the most potent way,” explained Tame Impala leader Kevin Parker.

His fresh take on the classic tune sees the artist return to his old psych-rock sound. In the second half of the six-minute cover, we hear a more subdued, sparse and cleaner side of Parker’s sound. Tune in here:

‘Sending Hearts To All My Dearies – A Tribute To The Smashing Pumpkins’ is described as an “ambitious” album, “celebrating one of the most influential catalogues in modern rock history”.

It is due for release digitally on August 14 via Sumerian Records, ahead of a deluxe 2xLP vinyl edition (featuring multiple exclusive multi-colour variants set) coming on October 16. Pre-order/pre-save here.

“Excited to have a great group of contemporary artists covering SP tracks,” the Pumpkins wrote on social media. “Go stream Tame Impala’s version of ‘Hummer’ now.”

An official description reads: “More than a tribute album, ‘Sending Hearts To All My Dearies’ serves as a conversation between generations of artists, with musicians shaped by The Smashing Pumpkins’ fearless songwriting, experimentation, and emotional honesty paying homage through reinterpretation and new perspective.”

“More than three decades after redefining alternative rock, the band’s music continues to inspire artists and audiences alike, making this collection both a celebration of their enduring legacy and a reminder that truly great songs never stop evolving,” it adds.

Corgan once called ‘Siamese Dream’ his “middle finger to the indie world”. He explained “As dark a records as ‘Siamese Dream’ is, there’s a lot of fun in it, it’s almost like we’re kind of laughing at how stupid the whole thing is. It’s like, here’s my pop song about suicide and here’s my epic song about child abuse…”
