After a challenging start to winter, snow has finally returned to parts of New Zealand’s ski country over the past 24 hours, providing a timely boost for resorts preparing for the heart of the 2026 season.

The latest cold front delivered fresh snowfall across several North and South Island mountains on Monday, June 15 and Tuesday, June 16, coating upper slopes in white and dramatically improving the winter atmosphere after weeks of lean early-season conditions. While accumulations were not huge, the snow could be the start of a bigger front over New Zealand.

The snowfall was particularly welcome for resorts around the Queenstown-Lakes district and Canterbury, where three of New Zealand’s largest operators had to announce delayed season starts last week. Cardona Alpine Resort, Mt Hutt Ski Area, and The Remarkables, all pushed back their opening dates.

While it is still very early in the season, the latest snowfall gave a welcome transformation of the mountain landscapes into a winter wonderland. For skiers and snowboarders downunder, it is the most encouraging sign yet that the 2026 season may be starting to find its footing.
