The Philadelphia 76ers have found the next leader of their front office.
Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey has agreed to be Philly’s new president of basketball operations, replacing Daryl Morey, league sources confirmed to The Athletic. ESPN was first to confirm a deal.
Gansey rose to prominence in Cleveland’s front office over the last decade, steadily working his way up to general manager. He lands the top spot in Philadelphia, a position that will report to Bob Myers and the ownership group led by Josh Harris. Gansey played basketball at West Virginia University and was once a versatile small forward for coach John Beilein.

In Philadelphia, Gansey will lead the front office and be tasked with running day-to-day operations. He emerged as the lead candidate for the position over recent days. With the 76ers, Gansey will inherit a team led by Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. He will also inherit a team with significant financial challenges that won 45 games this season and advanced to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Gansey is expected to sign a deal early next week. With the NBA Draft and free agency looming over the next six weeks, it will be a busy time for the 76ers.
Gansey emerged from a pool of candidates that included current Sixers assistant general manager Jameer Nelson, Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd and Phoenix Mercury general manager Nick U’Ren. Lloyd was a finalist for the Chicago Bulls opening that eventually went to Bryson Graham. U’Ren previously worked with Myers in Golden State’s front office.
Nelson and current 76ers general manager Elton Brand have helped run Philly’s front office since the decision to part ways with Morey. League sources have characterized Nelson as someone the Sixers value significantly. The bulk of the front office and day-to-day operations will be evaluated upon Gansey’s official arrival.
