Mammoth Mountain, California, has canceled its annual Pond Skim at Canyon Lodge, the resort confirmed in a social media post yesterday, citing conditions that made the beloved spring tradition unworkable. The event, which draws crowds each year to watch skiers and snowboarders attempt to cross a meltwater pond in costume, will not take place this season.

The resort did not specify the reason for the cancellation beyond describing it as a “difficult decision,” but noted that the move comes with more than 100 trails still open and a 10-day forecast, which it called reason enough not to write off the season.

“We are not giving up on this season,” the resort said, pointing to a packed spring events schedule running through the end of April.

Pond Skim has long served as a rite of passage at Mammoth, equal parts spectacle and send-off, and its absence leaves a notable gap in what the resort markets as its “Second Season.” That campaign, now in full swing, pitches spring at Mammoth as a distinct experience: longer days, softer snow, and après that stretches into golden hour. The mountain is committed to staying open through at least Memorial Day.

Mammoth Mountain Pond Skim Canceled — What’s Still on the Spring Calendar

Canyon Lodge, which anchors the lower mountain’s operations, is winding down for the season. A wrap party for Canyon Lodge Après runs April 10 and 11, with the lodge finishing operations entirely on April 19. After that, the activity shifts to the Main Lodge area.

Honky Tonk on The Hill runs Friday and Saturday nights through April 25, bringing live music to the hill. April 25 also features Party in the Park and the B4BC Love Your Peaks event, presented by Boarding for Breast Cancer, which uses the mountain as a platform for fundraising and awareness.

For guests planning end-of-season trips, the practical picture remains strong. With more than 100 trails open and spring pricing in effect, Mammoth’s Second Season offers legitimate skiing at reduced cost. The resort is pushing that value proposition hard, with deals and updates rolling out throughout the spring.

Pond Skim or not, the calendar still closes out with enough activity to give the season a proper send-off. As we do every year, SnowBrains will be in Mammoth for May, reporting on resort and backcountry conditions in the Eastern Sierra.
