Singer’s latest creation is a widebody ‘80s Carrera Cabriolet, and we love it

The ultimate classic 911? Practically any Singer could qualify, but where cool is concerned, its newest creation is perhaps the best yet: meet the 911 Carrera Cabriolet remagined by Singer.
Inspired by the rare widebody 1980s Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, it’s in essence a drop-top version of the Carrera Coupe revealed last year, though there’s quite a lot more to it than that.
While Porsche offered the option of a Turbo-look widebody in period for the Carrera Cabriolet, a customer can use any 964 convertible as the donor car for their Singer. The body is widened and made from carbon fibre, while the American firm has made a new Z-pattern design to give its reimagined 911’s roof a cleaner design, especially when folded, compared to the original.
Customers also still have the choice of the famous whale tail rear wing that’s fixed or a speed-activated spoiler to manage airflow of the car at higher speeds. The spotlights – or ‘performance auxiliary driving lights’ in Singer speak – that pop up from the bonnet are also a must-have option.
Powering the Carrera Cabriolet is the same 4.0-litre flat-six as the Coupe, drawing on the inspiration from Singer’s lightweight DLS program. Jointly developed with Cosworth, it’s the first Singer engine to feature variable valve timing, with two main purposes: making it easier to drive through the streets of Malibu (other glamorous beachfronts are available) and providing more power at higher revs.
Other nerdy details include it being the first Singer engine to use water-cooled cylinder heads combined with air-cooled cylinders, as well as an electrically powered fan. It revs to over 8,000rpm while also packing a six-speed manual, which can also be specified with an exposed shift mechanism.
Rob Dickinson, founder of Singer, said: ‘Our services reference the widebody Carrera Cabriolet and celebrate another chapter in the evolution of the 911, with the ultimate, open-roof, naturally aspirated G model 911, reimagined for the twenty-first century.
‘The sporting nature of the Carrera led us to reappraise the period roof mechanism to reduce weight and enable a sleek profile with the roof raised or lowered. The remarkable flat-six brings together our learnings from the last fifteen years and can now be heard more clearly than ever.”
Other more modern details on this new Singer include four-way electronically adjustable dampers, as well as a front nose lift. Carbon ceramic brakes can also be added.
The beauty of a Singer is that an almost infinite degree of customisation are available. These two Carrera Cabriolets pictured are both customer cars and show the bespoke paint, leather and materials on offer.
Only 75 will be produced, and while there’s no word on pricing, using the cost $1.5m Carrera Coupe as an example (that figure doesn’t include the donor 964 and taxes) so expect a significant premium on top of that for the Cabriolet’s fancy roof.
